Alemannia Aachen took a decisive step in the race for promotion to the 3rd division and extended their lead at the top of the table with a 1-0 win against Fortuna Köln. Anton Heinz’s winning goal extended the gap to eleven points, while Bocholt and Wuppertal are now well behind. The match was characterised by high intensity and fighting, with both teams sparing no effort, but they were unable to score for a long time. Despite a number of chances on both sides, including a couple of dangerous long-range shots and headers, the score remained 0-0 for a long time, but Aachen capitalised on one of the few opportunities through Heinz, who slotted home after a rebound.
Fortuna certainly had their moments and could have decided the game in their favour, but lacked the necessary effectiveness in finishing. Aachen’s defence was largely solid, even if they were lucky not to concede the equaliser in a few dicey situations. Both Aachen and Cologne showed phases in which they dominated the game, but ultimately it was Aachen’s ability to capitalise on their chances and defend at critical moments that secured them victory. Despite Cologne’s superiority in many phases of the game and several clear chances to equalise, Aachen remained victorious and Alemannia’s promotion to League 3 is within their grasp.
