On matchday 31 of the 2nd German Handball League, TUSEM Essen suffered a home defeat against HSG Nordhorn-Lingen by 25:29 (half-time 14:14), which dropped them to 12th place in the table.
In their penultimate home game of the season, they welcomed HSG Nordhorn-Lingen, a team featuring several former Essen players such as Georg Pöhle and Lucas Firnhaber. The latter, along with Lasse Seidel, who did not play, returned to their former venue. Alexander Schoss was missing for TUSEM in this game.
The game was evenly poised up to half-time, with Essen having an initial advantage. The hosts started strongly, defended well and had success in attack through players such as Philipp Asmussen and Nils Homscheid, who converted all seven-metre penalties. However, Nordhorn-Lingen’s centre Dominik Kalafut countered with several goals.
Nordhorn-Lingen improved its defence over the course of the game and goalkeeper Björn Buhrmester stopped several Essen attacks. The lead changed hands several times until the visitors stepped up the pace in the second half and were able to pull away. Despite Essen’s subsequent attempts to get back into the game, it was not enough to secure victory.
