Alemannia Aachen returned to the 3rd division after eleven years and faced Rot-Weiss Essen in front of 19,200 spectators in the sold-out stadium on Hafenstraße. The hosts, who strengthened their defence with Ahmet Arslan among others, were unable to prevent Aachen from playing courageously and disrupting the game early on despite a number of new signings.

The game began intensively, with Aachen repeatedly putting the Essen defence under pressure. In the 28th minute, Anton Heinz capitalised on a mistake by Kaparos to put Aachen ahead. However, Essen quickly hit back when Leonardo Vonic equalised from an Arslan corner (36′). Aachen continued to press consistently in the second half. The decision was made in the 74th minute when Kevin Goden played a cross to Heinz, who finished to make it 2:1. Essen tried everything in the final phase to equalise, but failed several times, including hitting the post.

In the end, Aachen managed to keep the score at 1:2. It was Rot-Weiss Essen’s third opening defeat in a row in the 3rd division.
